The Mattis Five Pillars: Finance

Finance is an important aspect of our family unit and we believe that it is important to teach our children the value of money. We both grew up from humble beginnings lacking some of the necessities within respective households. As a result, we strived for self-improvement through education and business opportunities to improve our chances of providing a better life for our immediate and extended family. It is apropos to reiterate our motto that “our greatest currency is our family” to highlight the importance of enriching the family. As written in 1 Timothy 6: 10, the ‘love of money’ is dangerous, however, we understand that money itself is not dangerous. Rather, the context of the verse really applies to individuals that loves money so much that they would do anything for it. Our financial compass encompasses investing in the stock market, land, starting a business and teaching our children the value of money at an early age. To accomplish this, we have opened investment accounts for them and allow them to participate in its growth (Arielle is on the younger side, so we will have to exclude her in managing her account).

One of our goals as it pertains to this pillar is to give our children a better start in life than what we had. It is quite difficult navigating through this era of unlimited wants, where children and some adults wants all the new gadgets, cars, latest designer items and things of that nature. It is here that we believe that discipline is necessary and to adjudicate between what is a need and what is a want. There is nothing wrong with having nice things however as a family budgeting has proven to be effective in meeting our needs. Please understand this, wearing Gucci and borrowing money to pay rent or mortgage is not cool! Some of these lessons are hard for our children to grasp at times especially when they compare themselves to other children that may have all the things they ask their parents for. Nevertheless, it is our duty to ensure we as a family are financially competent and learn from our mistakes to ensure a better future for our family.
